Ideal Bagel Co. hit West Broad in October, along with Luna Bread. Since the two restaurants are adjacent, you'd assume that they are partners. Well, you're right! Luna Bread is a little older than Ideal. Before setting up its flagship shop, Luna Bread made its way around farmers markets and into Athens stores such as the Daily Co-op. The owner likes to say that Luna is the mom and Ideal is the little brother.
Ideal's staff makes what it can in-house. They smoke their own fish (more on that later) and pickle their own cucumbers and onions. And, you know, the bagels, obviously. They get their produce from Market Fresh in Bogart.
If you're groggy or just want a blast of caffeine, Ideal has Counter Culture coffee available. This may not be local coffee, but it still packs a punch and is really effective at waking you up.
Ideal also serves sandwiches made on Luna bread, because what's a business family without support?
But I'll get to the bagels, because I know that's what you're really curious about. I'll leave the photos at their actual size so you can see the beauty and detail that went into what I ate.
Ideal Bagel Co. reflects the nature of the bagel that we have all come to love. The food doesn't take that long to prepare, and you can still eat it with your hands. Plus, it's really satisfying. That's a breakfast I can call ideal.
